How to Transcribe a Spotify Podcast from an Episode Link
Copy a Spotify episode link, paste it into PodText, and get a timestamped transcript you can search and export. Includes what to do when the link doesn't work.
By PodText TeamPublished

The short answer: To transcribe a Spotify podcast, open the episode in Spotify, choose Share, copy the episode link, and paste it into PodText. PodText uses the link to find the show's public podcast feed, transcribes the audio from that feed, and gives you a timestamped transcript you can search and export. It works for publicly distributed shows. It doesn't work for Spotify exclusives.
This guide is written by the PodText team, so it's a how-to for our own product and not an independent review. PodText isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Spotify.
Does Spotify already have a transcript?
Sometimes. Spotify shows transcripts on some episodes, and its help pages say listeners see them in the Now Playing view and on episode pages in the mobile app. The same pages say transcripts aren't available to all creators, and that a creator can turn them off for one episode or for the whole show.
So check the episode in the Spotify mobile app first. You'll want your own transcript when the episode has none, or when you need a file you can keep, text to quote, subtitles for a clip, or a summary to skim.
Copy the episode link from Spotify
You need the link to one specific episode. Spotify's help pages describe these steps:
Phone or tablet
- Open the episode and tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Share.
- Choose the option to copy the link.
Desktop app or web player (open.spotify.com)
- Right-click the episode, or click the three-dot menu next to it.
- Choose Share.
- Choose Copy Episode Link.
The link should start with https://open.spotify.com/episode/. Anything after a ?, like ?si=…, is tracking data and can stay. If you ended up with a shortened link instead, open it in a browser and copy the full address from the address bar.
Submit the link to PodText
- Paste the link. Go to PodText's Spotify page and paste the URL into the link field.
- Check what it found. PodText shows the episode title and length so you can confirm it's the right one.
- Check the language. Auto-detect is the default. You can pick the language yourself from 99+ options, which helps when an episode mixes languages.
- Sign in. New accounts are created with Google and get 60 one-time credits, with no credit card required.
- Confirm and start. You'll see the cost before anything runs: 1 credit per minute of audio, with partial minutes rounded up. You're also asked to confirm that you have the rights and consents needed to process the content.
- Wait for the transcript. Processing runs in the background and a progress view shows where the job is. When it finishes, the transcript opens in your account.
Example: a Radiolab episode
Take Math Vs Machine, an episode of WNYC's Radiolab that's 31 minutes and 22 seconds long. Its Spotify link is https://open.spotify.com/episode/7zndqCr4dhDKoFqRJgluGA.
The show's public feed has an episode with the same title, so that's the audio PodText transcribes. At 31:22, the job costs 32 credits, which fits inside the free signup allowance.
What you get
- A timestamped transcript. The text is split into passages, each with its time in the episode.
- Playback that follows the text. The current passage is highlighted as the audio plays, and clicking a passage jumps the audio to that point.
- Search. Find a name, a number, or a phrase anywhere in the episode, with matches highlighted.
- AI insights. A summary, chapters, key points, and notable quotes. Chapters and quotes link back to their place in the audio.
- Exports. Markdown, TXT, SRT, and VTT, plus a copy button for the full text.
A few things PodText doesn't do: it doesn't label speakers, you can't edit the transcript inside the app, and there's no PDF export.
Search, review, summarize, and export
- Start with the summary and chapters to find the parts worth a close read.
- Search for what you came for, such as a name or a figure a guest mentioned.
- Check anything you plan to quote. Click the passage and listen. Names, brands, and numbers are where speech recognition slips most often. How accurate AI transcription is covers why.
- Export in the format that fits the job. Use Markdown or TXT for notes and drafts, and SRT or VTT for subtitles. If you're not sure which subtitle file you need, see SRT vs. VTT.
Episode links versus show links
- An episode link (
open.spotify.com/episode/…) goes straight to the confirmation step. Use this when you know which episode you want. - A show link (
open.spotify.com/show/…) opens a list of the show's episodes. You pick one and confirm it.
A show link transcribes one episode at a time. PodText doesn't import a whole show in a batch.
When the Spotify link doesn't work
PodText doesn't download audio from Spotify. It reads the episode title and show name, looks for the publisher's public RSS feed, and matches the episode by title. If any step comes up empty, PodText tells you before any credits are charged. The usual causes:
- The show is a Spotify exclusive or original. There's no public feed, so there's no audio to fetch. A link can't fix this.
- The episode is subscriber-only or a paid bonus. Those episodes aren't in the public feed.
- The episode only exists on Spotify as video. PodText works from the audio in the public feed. If the show also publishes that episode as audio elsewhere, use that source.
- The title doesn't match. If the feed uses a different title for the episode, or has two episodes with the same title, PodText stops instead of guessing. Transcribing the wrong episode would be worse than failing.
- Spotify doesn't return the episode's details. This can happen with content that's limited to certain regions.
In most of these cases the next thing to try is another route to the same show: its Apple Podcasts link or its RSS feed. How to transcribe a podcast from a link lists every accepted link type.
When you need to upload a file instead
Upload when no public link works and you have a legitimate copy of the recording:
- You made the episode and have the original file.
- You pay for a subscriber feed that lets you download episodes for personal use.
- The publisher offers a download on their own website.
PodText accepts audio and video files up to 500 MB and 6 hours. For video, it transcribes the audio track.
Don't use tools that rip audio out of Spotify. That generally goes against Spotify's terms of use, and PodText isn't built to work around access controls.
Privacy, permission, and responsible use
- Your transcripts are private. They're visible only in your account and aren't published or indexed. You can delete a transcript, or your whole account, at any time.
- A transcript doesn't change who owns the episode. Republishing a full transcript of someone else's show usually needs the publisher's permission.
- Quote with care. Keep quotations short, attribute them to the show and episode, and check the wording against the audio first.
FAQ
Can I get a transcript of a Spotify podcast?
Often, yes. Some episodes have a transcript inside the Spotify mobile app. For others, paste the episode link into PodText. It works when the show also has a public podcast feed.
Can I transcribe a Spotify episode from its link?
Yes. Copy the episode link from Spotify's Share menu and paste it into PodText. You don't download anything, and PodText doesn't ask for your Spotify login.
What if the Spotify podcast has no transcript?
Make your own. Paste the episode link into PodText. If the show is a Spotify exclusive, look for a legitimate copy of the recording and upload it.
Does it work with Spotify exclusives?
No. Exclusive and original shows aren't distributed through a public feed, so there's no audio PodText can reach from the link.
How much does it cost?
One credit per minute of audio, rounded up. New accounts get 60 one-time credits without a credit card. If a transcription fails or you cancel it, the credits are refunded in full. See pricing.
Try it with an episode you have open
If there's an episode in your Spotify queue you'd like in text, copy its link and paste it into PodText. You'll see the episode and its credit cost before anything runs.
